Mentors Matter

Before the first swing, before the first lesson, before a child ever picks up a golf club — there’s a mentor.

At First Tee – Greater Wilmington, more than 100 volunteers give their time and hearts to the young people in our programs. They show up after work, on weekends, in the heat of summer and the chill of early mornings, simply because they believe a kid deserves someone in their corner. They create safe, welcoming spaces where participants can be fully themselves — where mistakes are okay, encouragement is constant, and every child feels seen.

Because mentorship isn’t just about teaching the game. It’s about showing up consistently and selflessly. It’s helping a child believe they’re capable when things feel hard. It’s reminding them they belong. It’s listening, guiding, celebrating the small wins, and walking alongside them as they learn to navigate life’s challenges.

Our volunteers deliver First Tee’s life skills curriculum, but what they really give is confidence, stability, and connection. And that time — their time — means more than anything to us and the youth we serve. Long after the round ends, the lessons and relationships remain.

At First Tee, the impact goes far beyond the fairway. It starts with a mentor.
